How It started
What if beadwork could do more than tell a story? What if it could help shape one?
For generations, Maasai women have used beads to express identity, celebrate milestones, and share stories. Every colour, pattern, and design carries meaning. Beadwork is more than a craft it is part of culture, heritage, and community.
Across our landscape, over 400 women from the Olkiramatian, Olorgesailie and Empaash have together to form a social enterprise using their skills to create opportunities for themselves, their families and communities. With our support they are turning traditional craftsmanship into a source of income while helping to strengthen a model of coexistence that has existed for generations.
When you spend time in this landscape, you quickly notice something remarkable. Livestock graze where zebras roam. The community understands that their future is closely tied to the health of the land. For the women behind Conservation Beads, conservation is not something separate from daily life. It is woven into it. They know that when the land is healthy, families are stronger, livelihoods are more secure, and future generations have more opportunities and that is why Conservation Beads is about more than jewellery. It is about connecting women to markets, creating reliable incomes, preserving cultural traditions, and celebrating a way of life where people and nature share the same space and future.
Every piece carries the hands, stories, and hopes of the woman who made it. Every purchase helps support a family, invest in a community, and reinforce the idea that conservation works best when communities are at its heart.
So when you hold a piece of Conservation Beads, you are holding more than handcrafted beadwork. You are holding a story of resilience, culture, and coexistence a story that reminds us that people and nature do not simply live alongside one another. They thrive together!
SORALO will continue growing this model across the wider landscape to reach more communities and ensuring more women can benefit from this opportunity and be part of the story.
